The Belgian authority responsible for nuclear waste, NERAS, surprisingly carries out a consultation for a nuclear waste repository in Belgium.
The aim of the procedure is to determine how the nuclear waste from the Belgian nuclear reactors in Tihange and Doel will be stored. The procedure is due to end on 13 June. Apparently, an unpopular decision is to be pushed through in the shadow of the Corona crisis.
People and authorities in the border regions in Germany, the Netherlands and Luxembourg were not informed. This violates applicable EU law and international conventions. According to the case law of the European Court of Justice, Belgium also has to carry out a cross-border environmental impact assessment for the planned extension of the project's duration - which has not yet been done.
